Meet Your Holistic Writing Coach

Hi, I’m Emma KvÄ›tna.

I am a lover of words and language, and all the ways in which we can use them to create meaning, story, art, change and shared experience. I love teaching about and discussing the craft of writing, as well as philosophies and histories surrounding writing, art, and creativity.

Writing and reading has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. From the time I was about 6, I loved writing stories, and later, essays as well. I am very much at home in prose writing, having regularly kept a journal since I could hold a pen (I have a huge journal collection!).

Poetry and songwriting came to me later in life but I am now finding ways to express myself comfortably there as well.

As an introverted big thinker, I constantly need time to process things, and writing is the only way I know how to do that. I’ve gotten better at verbal communication over the years, but communicating through writing is still my strongest skill.

I had an overwhelming sense that nothing I wrote was worth reading.

You can imagine then the identity crisis I had when I went through a 4-year-long writer’s block in my early 20s. For various reasons, I couldn’t bring myself to write anything, and anytime I did try I had an overwhelming sense that nothing I wrote was worth reading and that I’d never be able to accomplish the things I wanted to with writing, so why bother? I even considered giving it up entirely! A thought I shudder to think back on.

When I’d finally had enough, that’s when I discovered the magical power of pausing, going inwards, and holding up a metaphorical magnifying glass to the issue at hand. This allowed me to identify and fix issues at a root-level, increase my self-knowledge, engage more deeply with my craft than I ever had before, and actually led to my first publication in a literary magazine.

Since then I haven’t looked back; I now know exactly what I need in order to optimize my writing process and am prepared, should any further blockages arise (because they always will!).

A lot of the epiphanies, ideas, thought reframes and changes I made to my writing process were not things that I could ever have learnt in a classroom, even though I had taken writing courses before. At the end of the day, I realized that while craft gives spirit to my writing, it does not sustain it. A balance of healthy behaviours, thoughts, emotions and spirituality along with craft is what sustains the creative process. I like to call these The 5 Elements of Writing. They are what fuels my methodology The Rewire Technique.

This holistic approach that arose out of my experiences is what I want to share with you through coaching. I believe that we all have the answers deep inside of us for why we’re stuck with our writing. I believe that writing is one of the most powerful forces on the planet and requires time, curiosity, and skill to master it. I believe that writing can transform and grow us, and that where there’s a will, there is always a way.
